Details

All participants must be pre-approved by the crew leader before registering. Message or email Tiffanie Ellis or Rob Bowe for approval and registration instructions.

Do not hesitate to contact us as soon as you can if you are interested or have questions! Registrations will be in order of approval and based on participants meeting all prerequisites (see below).

Participation is subject to BWAC rules, i.e. trip leaders can deny participation to anyone for any or no reason.

The Mission

The Duluth BWAC Chapter is calling back those enthusiastic volunteers who signed up for a trip last spring but were unable to attend. The mission is back on and this time we will be cleaning up the Powwow Trail! Our mission is to remove brush crowding the trail and cut new tree falls along the gateway.

Itinerary

Frost River is providing free van transportation for volunteers from their store and back. We will leave from the Frost River Store early Saturday morning at 5:30am on September 30th. Upon arrival at the trailhead, there will be a safety talk before we begin our hike. We will work using Katana Boys, Silky saws, and loppers. There will be breaks as needed as well as a lunch break. Safety is our #1 priority. We will return to the Frost River Store by 9pm.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Each participant will carry their own pack. What you will need to provide: Leather work gloves, sturdy hiking boots, extra dry socks, layered clothing, reliable rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, whistle, compass, TP, bug repellent. Bring lunch, snacks, two quarts of water, and a “can-do” attitude. A more detailed list will be emailed to the crew members at a later date.

BWAC will provide

BWCAW permit for the group, safety glasses, tools, first aid kit, rain tarps, a McKenzie map #19, and BWAC logo buff as a thank you gift for each volunteer.

In addition, Frost River is offering free use of a hand crafted backpack for the trip to volunteers requesting one (inquire at Frost River). By investing a day of your time you will be creating a lasting value for hikers and help preserve this amazing trail for society.

Prerequisites “You must attend both”:

1. The crew member training on Monday, September 10th at Frost River Store from 6-7:30pm

2. The Meet & Greet Hike on Saturday, September 16th at Hartley Nature Center from 1-3pm

This trip is tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and pet free. Participants should be in good physical condition, able to hike 10 miles a day, be amiable crew members, self motivated, goal oriented yet with safety in mind for both self and the team.
