What Will Be Presented?
Interested in helping to restore the BWCA Powwow Trail for hikers and backpackers like you? This one hour workshop will make you familiar with wilderness trail clearing topics: cutting tree falls safely, trail clearing standards, participant and team expectations, proper clothing and gear for the trip, goals, food and itinerary. The workshop is required for volunteers on October 15 day trip to clean up the first several miles of the Powwow Trail. Even if you participated in past trail clearing trips, please attend to refresh your skills. Not going on this trip? Anyone can attend!
Why Clear the BWCAW Powwow Trail?
Most of the 30 mile long Powwow Trail burned in the 2011 Pagami Creek Fire (PCF). The fire was catastrophic, and the Powwow was closed for several years. BWAC volunteers offered to help restore the trail and have been clearing dead falls and post fire jack pine growth every year making the trail passable. Although the number of dead standing trees remaining is fewer each year, there is still plenty of work to be done. Join us for the adventure and help clear a path through the forest!
How Will We Do It?:
The BWA Committee and the Frost River have teamed up to bring back the Powwow Trail for hikers like you since 2017! Frost River is again providing a free van ride for Duluth area volunteers to and back from the Powwow Trail on the October 15 day trip. As a bonus, Frost River will provide free loaners of a genuine traditional leather and canvas backpack.
Presentation attendees will receive a Bent Paddle "penny-a-pint" coupon (subject to availability, that's quite a deal!). There will also be a door prize drawing at the workshop.
Those interested in signing up for the October 15 day trip or have questions: Contact Martin Kubik at martin.kubik@boundarywaterstrails.org or text six51-21four-5eight49 and let us know how and when to reach you. Trip participants will get McKenzie map #19 which includes our work area on the Powwow Trail and a mug with the BWAC logo.
