Play in the dirt during the day and sleep under the stars at night. Join crew leaders Lucas and Susan on this 4 day backcountry trail clearing trip to the northernmost segment of the Powwow Trail. October means shorter days, temps 35-60°, and fall colors in the Boundary Waters.
Thursday morning it's up and at 'em for our convoy/carpool to Kawishiwi Lodge/Lake One Outfitters. We will paddle and portage about three hours from the beach on Lake One through Lakes Two and Three, and on to our destination campsite on Horseshoe Lake. If time allows after setting up tents we will scout the trail and have a safety and intro to tools in-the-field training.
Friday and Saturday, our crew will hike to the trail and clear east toward North Wilder Lake. Sunday we will break camp, paddle back to Kawishiwi Lodge and return home.
Cost: $25 Meetup registration, your food while on trail, gas round trip for your vehicle or shared vehicle. Kawishiwi Lodge is a long-time sponsor of the Boundary Waters Advisory and will be donating use of canoes, paddles and PFD's for our crew.
We will schedule a meet-and-greet, gear check, social distancing hike when this event is filled.
BEFORE YOUR RSVP: Meetup message Lucas or Susan with your phone number and a good time to call. We'll determine if the trip is a good match and discuss steps to get ready for the trail. All volunteers must read and sign the BWAC participant liability form, BWAC health & medical self-disclosure form, BWAC policy for trips under covid-19, and the USFS volunteer agreement group signature form. Visit www.BoundaryWatersTrails.org to review required forms and for a suggested gear list.
We welcome new volunteers; no experience required. Crew leaders will balance novice participants with more experienced members.
Volunteers are bringing back the Powwow Trail—you can be part of the success story! The Boundary Waters Advisory Committee (BWAC) is a 100% volunteer-run Minnesota nonprofit that has been restoring trails in Minnesota's BWCAW since 2002.
