What We Achieved in 2019

In 2019, BWAC focused its efforts on the Powwow Trail

  • 30 of 32 miles of trail cleared or re-opened

  • 23 all-volunteer wilderness trips: canoe in; backpack-in; and day trips

  • 175 volunteer crew memebers

  • 1000’s of new jack pine growth cleared

  • 100’s of fallen trees removed

  • 8 campsites located for restoration: Rock of Ages, Campfire, Path, Marathon, Mirror, North Wilder, Superstition, South Wilder

Overall 2019 Progress

This was done with the help of many volunteers over the course of 23 trips of all skill levels and lengths. Thank you to all the volunteers who came with us on these trips. Your help is making it possible to keep this trail available for all to enjoy.


Spring trips

April 22-27 - Lost City of Z and flagging

Two senior BWAC guides hiked onto the Powwow Trail from the Southern Trail head/EP# 86 to South Wilder Lake and marked the trail from there towards North Wilder Lake in preparation for future spring crews.

April 25-29 - Backpack Gateway West

A crew of nine hiked onto the southern stretch of the Powwow Trail and cleared a total of 2.41 miles in 2.5 days from tree falls and brush between the first Y-junction of the trail (the Wye) westwards towards the Marathon Lake campsite. 6 inches of snow during the last night.

May 3-5 - Cabin & day trip

The Twin Cities day crew of sixteen volunteers split into 3 teams and hiked north from the southern Trail head/EP#86 and cleared all notable tree falls between the second Y-junction and Pose Lake, between 175-200.

May 4 - Duluth Area Volunteer Day Trip

15 volunteers divided into two crews hiked onto the Powwow starting from the southern Trail head/EP#86, heading north. In just one day they removed 150 tree falls on a 1.5 mile stretch north of the Wye working towards Pose Lake.

May 9-13 - canoe and backpack to North Wilder

The team of 9 took canoes from Lake One south to Harbor Lake and hiked from there to the North Wilder backpacking campsite. Two days were spent finding and marking the trail through almost impenetrable jack pines and with clearing ~0.5 miles of the Powwow southwards toward South Wilder Lake.

May 9-13 - Powwow Trail North Frontier

A crew of 8 canoed and portaged from Lake One to the South Wilder Lake hiking campsite, from there cleared 0.6 miles heavy jack pine growth and tree falls from the north west end of South Wilder going ~NW towards North Wilder Lake.

May 17-20 - Hike in to South Wilder

Nine volunteers hiked 8 miles onto the PWT starting out at the southern Trail head/EP#86 to get close to South Wilder Lake. From there the crew cleared and widened 1.5 miles of the trail along the north eastern lake shore of South Wilder.

May 16-20 - Where the Wilder Things Are

The crew of 8 canoed from Lake One to Harbor Lake from where they hiked to the North Wilder campsite. Over 2 days the crew cleared jack pines and tree falls from the last uncleared stretch of 0.5 miles going south between North Wilder and South Wilder Lake.

May 23-27 - Trailhead to Superstition

9 volunteers backpacked onto the PWT from the Trail Head and hiked along the South side of the Powwow Trail to the Diana Lake campsite. A total section of 2.33 miles got cleared of massive tree fall and brush from west of Marathon Lake to the west of Diana Lake.

May 24-28 - Rebirth of the New Powwow Trail

A crew of 9 set out from Kawishiwi Lodge on Lake One and canoed to Lake Three from where they hiked south to the Mirror Lake campsite on the west side of the Powwow Trail. 0.64 miles of trail south of Mirror Lake toward Superstition were cleared and 0.87 miles between Path Lake and Rock of Ages.

May 25-27 - Powwow Loop Survey

A volunteer crew of 4 hiked the 32 miles of the Powwow Trail in 3 days to survey the trail conditions and count remaining tree falls.


Summer Trips

August 15-19 - Flag Superstition to Mirror

A team of four set out in canoes on Little Isabella River on the South side of the trail and canoed west to Quadga Lake, from where they backpacked to the campsite at Superstition Lake. A one-mile stretch was flagged and opened going north from the lake.


Fall Trips

August 29-September 2 - clearing by canoe

The team of 7 canoed and portaged from Lake One to the North Wilder campsite on its south east shore. From there the trail was cleared and widened towards the north tip of the lake for a total of 0.86 miles.

August 30-Sept 2 - Into the Green Mind

These 7 volunteers paddled from Lake One to the South shore of Lake Three where the PWT comes close to lake, and from there went south to beautiful Rock of Ages lake and cleared deadfalls, some jack pines and brush for a distance of 1.24 miles in two days.

September 12-16 - Are You Superstitious?

The crew of 4 hiked from the trailhead westwards toward Superstition Lake. On the south part of the trail heavy clearing was done for 0.54 miles from the Quadga Lake Spur towards Diana Lake, and also for 0.1 miles going North from the Superstition lake campsite.

September 14-16 - Horseshoe to N Wilder Recon

Two experienced wilderness guides went to investigate the clearing needs on the northernmost part of the trail between Lake Three and North Wilder Lake.

September 19-23 - Canoe Lake One to west PWT

A crew of 8 canoed from Kawishiwi Lodge south to Lake Three and then hiked 3 miles south on the trail to the Mirror Lake campsite, passing by Rock of Ages Lake and Path Lake. Clearing and trail widening was done between Mirror and Path Lake going north from Mirror Lake for a total distance of 1.7 miles.

September 26-29 - Hike in to Pose Creek

A crew of 6 tackled the stretch between Pose Lake and South Wilder Lake on the North East side of the Powwow Trail loop.

September 27-29 - Day Trip Crew

The team of 5 went onto the trail for a day and cleared a long stretch north of the Y-junction of brush.

October 10-13 - Trail Circumnavigation & Survey

This crew of 4 circumnavigated the entire Powwow Trail, surveying for sections needing priority clearing. Campsite fire grates were GPS tracked, the number of tent pads, standing hazard trees, and water access information at each site were recorded.

October 12 - Frost River/BWAC Day Trip

Two day trip crews of 6 and 8 volunteers hiked onto the Powwow Trail from the Trail Head/EP 86, one crew went west from the Wye, the other one went north to cut and remove tree falls. Both crews cleared a total of 2.2 miles

October 16-20 - It’s a marathon, not a sprint

A group of 7 volunteers hiked onto the South part of the Powwow Trail, westwards from the Y-junction and cleared tree falls and brush for 2.5 days from Marathon Lake to and beyond Lake Diana.

October 25 -27 - Late Fall Day Trip

Extensive brush clearing was accomplished by the crew of 6 one-day volunteers. The trail section cleared was just north of the Trailhead/EP 86 going up to the Wye.
