Join crew leaders Lucas Raudabaugh and Valentin Povarchuk on a backpacking trip to maintain the Brule Lake Trail. This is a beautiful trail through mature forests, leading to the tallest mountain in Minnesota - Eagle Mountain. With a relatively short hike in to the base campsite, this will be a great trip for new volunteers interested in helping to maintain access to beautiful wild lands of Superior National Forest.

WHAT TO EXPECT:
• Potential below freezing weather
• Wet trail conditions

TRIP SCHEDULE
Thursday May 1:
• Carpools will depart the Twin Cities Metro Area early morning, all meeting at Kwik Trip Two Harbors, then caravan to the Brule Lake Trailhead parking lot
• A 3 mile moderate hike in to Fishhook Lake for basecamp
• 6:00 pm group dinner at the camp site

Friday May 2, & Saturday May 3:
• 6:30 am wake up, breakfast at the campsite
• 8:00 am gather for safety talk, goals, and tool review
• Hike to work area together as a team to maintain the trail
* Section completion breaks and lunch break
• Return to campsite for 6:00 pm group dinner

Sunday May 4
• 6:30 am wake up, breakfast, break camp and return to trailhead
* Lunch stop, arrive back in Twin Cities 4- 6 pm

Registration cost: $40
Additional costs: $30 maximum shared fuel cost per passenger
Additional costs: on-trail food, and post trip meal

BWAC will provide:
Safety glasses, hardhats, kneepads, clearing tools, first aid kit, and maps for each crew member. BWAC has a limited number of free-to-use bearproof canisters, and UV water sterilization devices.

Crew members will provide: Backpack, tent or hammock, sleep system for 20 degrees, food & approved storage, cook kit, stove & fuel, lightweight water containers & water purification, personal items, rainwear, quick dry clothing, durable footwear, and leather work gloves.

Prerequisites:
• Required attendance at Spring Crew Member Orientation at REI BLOOMINGTON at 5:30 pm on April 29, 2025. Sign up on Meetup.
• Required attendance at a full crew hike session in April, where you meet your fellow crew members. We will cover crew expectations in more detail in addition to a hike.
• Participants should in good physical condition, able to hike 8 miles a day, able to work 8 hours a day, be able to kneel to lop and saw at ground level, work well with other crew members, and goal oriented with safety in mind for both self and the team
• Participants are required to sign a BWAC Health & Medical form, BWAC Liability and Photo Release form and a USFS Volunteer Service Agreement form prior to the trip at the orientation or group hike.
• Participants will be required to follow leaders' directions, and to wear safety glasses, hardhats, and leather gloves when handling tools, and trail clearing.
•Trip leaders have the right to refuse participation to anyone for any
reason.
• This trip is alcohol, tobacco, and pet free.

Please note the trip could be cancelled due to bad weather, fire danger, or other circumstances beyond the control of BWAC.
