#15 Powwow Trail Restoration: "Backpack Loop South"

This trip is full. Email Susan dot Pollock at BoundaryWatersTrails dot org to be added to the waitlist or with any concerns about BWAC fall trips.

Hit the trail with crew leaders Aaron and Susan as we revisit the Powwow's loop south. Late September can be a perfect time for trail clearing and backpacking—civil twilight (no headlamp needed) from 6:20 am to 7:20 pm, 40-60°F temps, and fall colors beginning to paint the landscape.

Thursday afternoon we will convoy/carpool from the metro area for the 250 mile drive north to the Powwow Trailhead. It will be twilight or dark for our final gear check and one mile hike to our first night's campsite next to the beautiful Isabella River. Amenities: latrine and fire grate. Friday it's pack up and hike north and west on the Powwow to our three night base camp. Location depends on clearing need we encounter. After setting up our tents we will scout the trail and have a safety and introduction to tools in-the-field training.

Saturday and Sunday, our crew will enjoy camping in the forest, each other (social distancing...in the fresh air), and working during the day defining trail so that hikers can safely access a wilderness nugget, the Powwow Trail. Monday we will break camp, return to trailhead and home.

Cost: $25 Meetup registration, your food while on trail, gas round trip for your vehicle or shared vehicle.

We will schedule a meet-and-greet, gear check, social distancing hike when this event is filled.

All volunteers must read and sign the BWAC participant liability form, BWAC health & medical self-disclosure form, BWAC policy for trips under covid-19, and the USFS volunteer agreement group signature form. Visit www.BoundaryWatersTrails.org for to review required forms and for a suggested gear list.

We welcome new volunteers; no experience required. Crew leaders will balance novice participants with more experienced members.

Volunteers are bringing back the Powwow Trail—you can be part of the success story! The Boundary Waters Advisory Committee (BWAC) is a 100% volunteer-run Minnesota nonprofit that has been restoring trails in Minnesota's BWCAW since 2002.
