Frost River/BWAC Day Trip Clean up on the Powwow Trail

  • Frost River 1910 West Superior Street Duluth, MN, 55806 United States (map)

Take a part in the miracle on the BWCAW Powwow Trail! Powwow is coming back to hiker use with help of volunteers. Be one them on October 12! This trip is intended for Duluth area residents but anyone can participate.

Purpose of this trip is to clear several miles of the path from the trail head going north toward Pose Lake. Last fall there were roughly 400 treefalls in a three mile long segment of the trail. Volunteer crews worked hard in May and September to clear numerous treefalls and jack pines. We will focus on new treefalls and remove brush crowding the trail.

Current plans are for day trip, leaving early morning on Saturday, October 12. Frost River is providing free van transportation for volunteers from their store and back. After a safety talk in the parking lot trailhead upon arrival, we will work in sub teams of three having Katana Boy and Silky Boy saws and a pair of loppers. There will be breaks as needed and lunch break. Safety is our number one goal.

Registration cost: $10 (show up money)

What you will need to provide: Leather work gloves, sturdy hiking boots, very likely rubber over boots for crossing couple of beaver dams with water running (or high, water proof hunting boots), extra dry socks, layered clothing, reliable rain gear, sunglasses, sunscreen, whistle, compass, TP, bug repellent, treat your clothing with Permethrin tick repellent prior to trip. Bring lunch, snacks, two quarts of water. More detailed list will be provided.

BWAC will provide: BWCAW permit for the group, safety glasses, tools, first aid kit, rain tarps, McKenzie map #19 for each volunteer.
By investing a day of your time you will be creating a lasting value for hikers and help preserve this amazing trail for society.
